Walking in the Eggen Valley

It may not be particularly large, but it is mostly the little things that are the most beautiful and charming. And charm is something the Eggen Valley definitely has in abundance! Charm, mysterious places and gigantic, graceful mountains to be exact. So let’s go! There is so much to discover, to admire, to photograph. You will find that, once you visit the Eggen Valley, you have to come back for more. Simply magic! ;-) Because the Eggen Valley, located at the heart of the age-old Dolomites, is one of those places in South Tyrol that, once you have been there, you will want to visit again and again. So follow our hiking tips and take a trip through a magically beautiful valley!

Closer to heaven

Truly a heavenly hiking tip! The 10-kilometre planetary trail in Obergummer lets you travel from Planet Earth to Pluto in less than three hours – on foot! ;) At a scale of 1:1,000,000,000 it is a comfortable walk from planet to planet, with an information point at each where you can learn all about Mercury, Venus, Mars and their fellows.

Art meets nature

Latemar.Art is also a fascinating themed trail: it is a circular route for adults and children, and for nature and art lovers! At an altitude of over 2,000 metres, Latemar.Art is one of the world’s highest exhibition sites. Famous international artists have graced this location with sculptures – here in the great outdoors, between meadows, forests and tree-tops. A truly beautiful prospect!

Mystical

Long ago a huge boulder crashed down from the Latemar massif, thus creating a unique path: the rock labyrinth! This mystical route starts at the Karer Forest: it first follows a forest road, then you suddenly find yourself under the impressive towers of the Latemar range. With its tunnels and stone steps, this 3-hour, constantly varying hike of medium difficulty is also ideal for children!

At the heart of the Rosengarten

From May to October this 5-hour tour is probably one of the area’s most spectacular: the circuit of the Rotwand in the heart of the Rosengarten! A challenging hike offering plenty of wonderful scenery and adventures, it also requires good technique, stamina and a head for heights! ;)

A view from on high

A hard climb will surely be rewarded with great views! This is certainly true of the hike from the Karer Pass to the Poppekanzel. Climb up through mountain meadows to the rocky outcrop of the Poppekanzel – it is well worth it! Three hours of challenging ascent are rewarded with magnificent views of the Pala group, the Marmolada, Sella massif, Langkofel, Rosengarten, Ötztal Alps and the Ortler massif! :)

It doesn’t actually matter whether you want to go straight ahead, up or down – the Eggen Valley contains any number of beautiful and amazing places to make you feel you have arrived in a natural mountain paradise. It has an atmosphere of its very own at any time of day: absolute tranquillity, freshness and seclusion in the early morning; the full brilliance of the meadow and mountain colours during the daytime; and, in the evening, the famous alpenglow that transforms the mountains and valleys into a mythical world!
