Hidden Gems in the Dolomites

Special places around Rosengarten and Latemar

Many visitors discover the Dolomites with children through well-known places: Lake Carezza, the Rosengarten massif or the famous hiking trails of the region. Yet around Rosengarten and Latemar there are also many quiet corners – places you often discover only when you step a little away from the main paths. For families especially, these are often the moments that remain in memory: a quiet forest trail, an alpine meadow with wide views, or a hidden viewpoint overlooking the Dolomites.

Wuhnleger

– a mirror view of the Rosengarten
One of the most beautiful natural places in the region is the Wuhnleger. The small alpine meadow above Tiers offers a spectacular view of the Rosengarten in the Dolomites.
A small mountain pond reflects the peaks perfectly on calm days – creating one of the most magical panoramas in the area.
The hike to the Wuhnleger leads through forests and alpine meadows and is also manageable with children. Once you arrive, the landscape feels almost fairy-tale-like.
Especially in the evening light, this spot becomes one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Dolomites.

The Latemar Meadows

Close to the mountain
Another beautiful place for families are the Latemar Meadows. These wide alpine meadows above Nova Levante offer impressive views of the dramatic rock formations of the Latemar in the Dolomites. Small trails cross the meadows and are perfect for an easy family hike in the Dolomites. Children often discover little details along the way – flowers, stones or sometimes even marmots.
At the same time, the mountains feel very close here. The steep rock walls of the Latemar rise dramatically above the meadows.

Alpine huts around the Passo Nigra

Those exploring the region during a family holiday in the Dolomites will find many quiet paths and alpine huts around the Niger Pass.
The landscape opens into wide meadows, forests and beautiful views of the Rosengarten. For children these hikes are especially enjoyable because along the way there are streams, flowers and small discoveries everywhere.
Many families combine a hike here with a stop at a mountain hut and enjoy local specialities while looking out across the Dolomites.

Early morning at Lake Carezza

Lake Carezza in the Dolomites is one of the most famous natural places in the region. During the day many visitors come here to admire the clear water and the reflection of the surrounding mountains. But there is a moment when the lake shows a completely different atmosphere: early in the morning. At that time the forest is still quiet, the water lies perfectly still and the peaks of the Rosengarten and Latemar slowly light up in the first sunlight. For families who visit the lake early, it often becomes one of the most memorable moments of their holiday in the Dolomites.

The Kaiserstein

– a place with history
Above Lake Carezza lies the Kaiserstein, a quiet viewpoint surrounded by forest. Today it may seem like a simple rock in a clearing, but the place has an interesting history.
In the past it was a favourite viewpoint of guests from the historic Grand Hotel Carezza, once one of the most famous alpine hotels.
It is said that Empress Sissi also visited this place during her stays at the Carezza and enjoyed the peaceful view of the surrounding mountains.

The Latemar Forrest

– resonance wood and quiet forest paths
Between Lake Carezza and the slopes of the Latemar lies the Latemar Forest, a place many visitors overlook.
Dense spruce forests alternate with small clearings that offer beautiful views of the Latemar in the Dolomites. The air here is especially clear and the forest paths are perfect for quiet walks.
Many of the spruce trees here are tonewood spruces, valued for their perfect structure used in instrument making. It is even said that the famous violin maker Antonio Stradivari used wood from this region for his instruments. Walking through the Latemar Forest quickly reveals why this area belongs among the true hidden gems of the Dolomites.
