Val d'Ega – a world of hiking paths: the top 3 summer walks!

Sheltered alternately by grey Dolomite rock and by woodland, Val d'Ega takes holidaymakers into a world of hiking paths that can boast a total length of over 530 kilometres.
This makes choosing hiking paths a little tricky, unless you spend your summer holiday at Hotel Engel. For along with weekly guided walks, you can look forward to exciting insider tips on hiking tours!

Hiking guide Ferdinand lets us in on his 3 absolute must-do hikes in Val d'Ega!

The Jo-Ha-Schi route

What sounds like a culinary speciality from Asia is actually an easy walk that starts from Hotel Engel and passes farmsteads, forests and meadows in 4 hours, affording fantastic views of the Schlern massif, Rosengarten and Latemar groups. The Jocher-Hagner-Schiller Farmstead Walk leads along the Promenadenweg path to Hotel Rosengarten and then on to Jocherhof farm, Hagneralm pasture and Schillerhof farm set at 1,555 metres above sea level, with path number 5 taking hikers back again. “A very pleasant walk, which is very family-friendly too, involving a total ascent of 375 metres!“ explains Ferdinand and offers another tip: “Wolfsgrube wolf pit at Wolfsgrubenjoch pass and the cheese dairy on Hagneralm pasture are a couple of little gems along the way!“

Through the romantic labyrinth

This walk of easy to medium difficulty leads from Karerpass through the legendary Latemarforst forest to the flowery Mitterleger labyrinth uphill path at 1,840 metres above sea level. The route then carries on to Grandhotel Karersee and down to deep Karersee lake, which lends the hotel its name. The colours of this lake alternate between striking blue, turquoise and deep green, causing visitors to stop and stare in wonder. “It is also known as 'the emerald of the Dolomites'“ says Ferdinand and advises stopping awhile to enjoy the beauty of the lake. A bus then leaves from Hotel Schwarzer Adler back again.
250 metres of ascent and 550 metres of descent are covered in 4.5 hours.

Enchanted by the Rotwand

This walk of medium difficulty starts at Kaiserstein car park and, taking path number 9, promises great all-round views to reward your hiking efforts. “Then it goes to Christomannos Monument. There are amazing far-reaching views to be had from this statue of a bronze eagle – reaching as far as an eagle's eye can see“, says Ferdinand with enthusiasm. The Rotwandhütte refuge at 2,283 metres above sea level is just right for a midday stop, before setting out with renewed vigour over mountain pastures and the Perlenweg path to the starting point.
This route may be done in 4.5 hours and covers an ascent of 550 metres.

This experienced hiking guide is sure of one thing: “All three hikes lead past enchanting spots that every visitor to Val d'Ega should see at least once!“ And Ferdinand?
He still cannot get enough of the beauty of his homeland after all his years out hiking.

Holidays are a form of luxury: not everyone has the time or financial means to afford them.

As free as a bird in the Dolomites!

“Get up, get up!” My boyfriend is particularly euphoric as he wakes me up this holiday morning. I try to resist his alarm call but, after three more shouts of “Get up!”, curiosity wins out.
